Lexi Thompson will make golf history at the 2023 Shriners Open by becoming the seventh woman to compete in a PGA Tour event. It hasn’t been done since 2018.
Thompson, who received a sponsor’s invite, was notified only a matter of weeks ago at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship. She finished tied for eighth before competing in The Ascendant LPGA tournament where she finished fifth.
Should Thompson make it to round three on Saturday, she would be the second woman to do so at a PGA event. It hasn’t been done since 1945. She’ll be competing in a field of 132 golfers for the $8.4 million purse.
For Thompson, she seems her historic appearance as successful even if she doesn’t make the cut.
“If I can leave here inspiring others, and especially the kids, the Shriners kids, that’s what it’s all about and what this tournament is,” she said in a press conference. “Of course, yes, I want to play good…There is more to life than just performing well.”
