Last time South Carolina lost at home: UConn ends Gamecock women’s historic 71-game home winning streak with blowout

Forget the NBA All-Star game and Daytona 500 — the premier event of the day was a top-10 showdown between two of women’s college basketball’s best teams. 

The No. 4 South Carolina Gamecocks and No. 7 Connecticut Huskies met on Sunday with history on the line. USC’s home winning streak stood at 71, 11 wins away from tying Stanford for the third-longest home win streak of all time. However, Paige Bueckers and the Huskies had something else in mind, topping South Carolina 87-58.

UConn entered the game 23-3 with a 7-2 road record. South Carolina was 23-2 and, of course, undefeated at home.

South Carolina led early 11-9, but then the game flipped and got out of hand fast. Tied at 11 with two and a half minutes remaining in the first quarter, Ashlynn Shade drained a three on a Bueckers assist. By the end of the period, UConn was up 21-14. 

The second quarter was all UConn. The Huskies outscored USC by 15, holding them to nine points in the period. It was 45-23 at halftime. South Carolina coach Dawn Staley was unable to stop the bleeding in the second half as the Huskies built on their lead, winning the third and fourth quarters to win 87-58.
