Lady Cathy Ferguson, wife of former Manchester United manager Sir Alex, dies aged 84

Sir Alex Ferguson’s wife, Lady Cathy Ferguson, has died aged 84.

A statement on behalf of the Ferguson family said: “We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing yesterday of Lady Cathy Ferguson, survived by her husband, three sons, two sisters, 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The family asks for privacy at this time.”

Manchester United released a statement, saying: “Everyone at Manchester United sends our heartfelt condolences to Sir Alex Ferguson and his family on the passing of Lady Cathy, a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a tower of strength for Sir Alex throughout his career.”

Manchester United men’s team will wear black armbands against Brentford on Saturday, with the women’s team doing so against Arsenal on Friday night. Flags at Old Trafford have been lowered in tribute.

Lady Cathy met Sir Alex Ferguson during their teenage years in Govan, Glasgow. They had been together for more than 50 years.

Sir Alex Ferguson, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest football managers in history, often spoke about the unwavering support and love he received from his wife throughout his career.
