Thirty-five head coaches have won a Super Bowl. One of them happens to be directly related to the man who could become the 36th on Sunday.
49ers coach Kyle Shanahan not only has a chance to win his first Super Bowl in Las Vegas, but he can make history as one half of a father-son championship-winning duo. Shanahan’s father, Mike, won back-to-back titles with the Broncos in the late 1990s, and he helped mold his son into one of the NFL’s best all-around head coaches.
The younger Shanahan is still just 44, but pressure is starting to mount as he leads a loaded San Francisco roster into battle against the Chiefs. Shanahan was part of the largest collapse in Super Bowl history as the Falcons’ offensive coordinator seven years ago, and his 49ers blew a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter against these same Chiefs in the Super Bowl four years ago.
If Shanahan can win one more game, though, that pressure fades away — and history will be made.
