The Women’s Basketball season came to an end on Sunday afternoon when the UConn Huskies delivered a dominant performance, securing the program’s 12th national championship. The Huskies were led by head coach Geno Auriemma and senior Paige Bueckers. Coming into the game, the two had never won a championship together at UConn, but that all changed with their victory over South Carolina.
The Huskies kept Dawn Staley and the Gamecocks rattled throughout the game, even causing South Carolina’s head coach to have a few tantrums along the way. In the end, it was UConn who got to hoist the trophy in the air.
With Auriemma and his team’s victory, the history set in 2022, when Staley became the first head coach to beat the Huskies in a national championship game, was rewritten. However, on Sunday afternoon, the Gamecocks were outplayed in every way possible.
“We lost to a very good basketball team. They beat our a**, but they didn’t make us like it – there’s a difference,” Staley told the media.
Auriemma made one of the most surprising admissions after the game. In fact, no one saw it coming, especially after his squad had just won the national championship. Nevertheless, Auriemma said it, and to him, it was the truth at the time.
