At the BNP Paribas Open, played on the Californian hard-courts of Indian Wells, Maria Sakkari beats Karolina Pliskova in three sets: 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 is the result in favor of the Greek tennis player, number seven in the world.
Not an easy match for her, who nonetheless conquers the quarterfinals at the second WTA 1000 tournament of the women’s tennis season. A match that was not deprived of controversy that saw the two protagonists. At 5-2 in the third set, Pliskova plays a diagonal passer that is called out by the chair umpire.
From the replay, however, it can be seen that Sakkari actually touched the ball with his racket before it went out. The chair umpire does not notice the touch and when Pliskova points out the gesture to them, the Greek tennis player is asked to tell her about her what happened.
The latter denies having touched the ball, although the replay shows precisely the deviation of the rotation of the ball. So the point ends Greek-style, not without Pliskova’s anger. Once the number of Greece has obtained the match point, Pliskova reacts to what is in fact an injustice suffered.
