“Records are made to be broken,” once said Paula Radcliffe, the British marathon world record holder. And this applies to all sports. And so it was this weekend in the women’s golf world.
The Korean Jin Young Ko successfully defended the HSBC Women’s World Championship title, obtained last year, after signing a card of 69 strokes (-3) in the final round and winning in Singapore with a total of 271 (-17). She wonby two strokes ahead of the world number two, the American Nelly Korda.
“I played well here. I think I need more time to work with my new swing,” Ko said to the press. “So it’s going well. It’s going very well, but I think I need more time to play with pressure”, she added.
The Korean has been battling a wrist injury, leading her to an unforgettable 2022 season. Luckily, her pains were absent this week on the par-72 Tanjong Course at Sentosa Golf Club.
Ko’s crying after winning one of the most important calendar titles for the second time explains the ordeal suffered last season.
“I had a tough year last year, and I fought with, like, injury and not a good game and mentally tough and everything, and then I won this week. It’s going to be more important to me, and it’s going to be big momentum for me in my life,” explained the winner, who won a $270,000 check.
Ko played the final round in great shape. Still battling a wrist injury that derailed his 2022 season, she broke down in tears after his triumphant comeback at Sentosa. The decisive day highlight was when she holed a 30-foot putt on the 13th hole for birdie.
Second place went to Korda, with 273 shots (-15), while the Japanese Ayaka Furue and the Americans Danielle Kang and Allisen Corpuz shared third place, with 274 (-14).
The HSBC Women’s World Championship is one of the most significant stops on the annual women’s golf calendar. The first edition was held in 2008 and won by the Mexican Lorena Ochoa.
