Seeds began their campaign in the 2023 edition of Indian Wells on Friday. Bar a couple of upsets, the seeds went on to make it to the third round of the BNP Paribas Open. Jil Teichmann who took on her compatriot Belinda Bencic in a Swiss derby upset the ninth-seeded Bencic in three sets in their second-round match.
Teichmann came from a set down to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in two hours and 32 minutes. Bencic converted three break points on Teichmann’s serve in the first set while losing her serve once. In the latter two sets, Teichmann upped her game to convert five break points on the 2020 Tokyo Olympics champion while losing her serve once each in them.
In the third round, Teichmann will now play Rebecca Peterson. The Swedish qualifier advanced to the next round after her second-round opponent, the 22nd-seeded Shuai Zhang retired while down 0-3 in the first set.

Meanwhile, Wang’s fellow countrywoman, Xinyu Wang ousted 18th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in their round-of-64 clash.
Wang won 6-2, 6-3 in 75 minutes. Wang won 57% of her second-serve points and 56% of points on return on Alexandrova’s second serve. Of the eight break points she faced; Wang saved seven while converting five break points on Alexandrova’s serve.
