Jessica Pegula called it “a sick stat” after learning that she and Tommy Paul became the first American players since 2008 to clinch wins in the same week over the world No 1 in the ATP and WTA rankings. On Saturday, world No 3 Pegula defeated top-ranked Iga Swiatek 6-2 6-7 (4) 6-4 in the Montreal semifinal.
A day earlier, Paul defeated world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz 6-3 4-6 6-3. The last time something like that happened was in 2008 Miami, when Serena Williams defeated Justine Henin and Andy Roddick beat Roger Federer.“This is a sick stat!” Pegula tweeted.

Pegula upset Swiatek in Montreal
Although Pegula failed to close out the match in two sets, she was able to keep her focus and get the job done in three sets.“It was a great match.
It was tough. Kind of a roller coaster. Really up and down, but I’m glad I was able to hold my nerve there at the end,” Pegula said.In the ninth game of the second set, Pegula broke Swiatek for a 5-4 lead and a chance to serve out for the match.
But Swiatek got the job done and forced a tie-break, in which she was 2-4 down before winning the next five points to win the set…
