Despite missing a portion of the first part of the season and recently returning to form after some injuries that kept her away from the court, Jessica Pegula came back to win a WTA 1000, the 3rd of her career, conquering the National Bank Open in Toronto, thus also winning her 2nd title of the season.
The American confirmed her title at the Canadian Open, this time winning on the hard courts of Toronto (we recall last year she succeeded in Montreal – ed.). A complicated and far from obvious final for the number 6 WTA, who defeated countrywoman Amanda Anisimova with the score of 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.
The 30-year-old has thus closed the gap on the fifth place occupied by Jasmine Paolini (almost 700 points still separate them) and can look forward with great confidence to the next upcoming engagements, especially the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati and the US Open.
In the post-match interview, Jez told an interesting anecdote about her family, in particular her grandparents. Pegula revealed that her grandparents are Canadian and, specifically, one from Toronto and one from Montreal. The American tennis star thus dedicated the victory to her grandparents.
