Jessica Pegula made quite a revelation shortly after making her first Grand Slam final as the 30-year-old confessed there were times when she “did not want” to play the game anymore.
On Thursday night in New York, the home favorite recovered from a set and a break down to complete a highly impressive 1-6 6-4 6-2 comeback over last year’s semifinalist Karolina Muchova.
For the American, this has already been a breakthrough Major since this is the first time that she has made it past the quarterfinal stage. In the past, the world No. 6 six times saw her campaign at a Slam end in the last-eight stage of a Slam.
And while Pegula established herself as one of the most consistent and best players on the WTA Tour, some would always use her negative Slam record as an argument against her. But now that she has been through to the US Open final and come a win away from becoming a Major winner, she has absolutely sent a very strong statement to her critics and doubters.
“I don’t know if I thought it’s not gonna happen, but there’s definitely moments where either I didn’t want to play tennis, I didn’t really know if I wanted to do it anymore. You definitely hit those types of low moments,” Pegula confessed.
