Top-ranked American female tennis player Jessica Pegula called Venus Williams “an icon” when asked about the seven-time Grand Slam champion’s longevity. Williams, who turned 43 in mid-June, returned to action last month after being sidelined for six months due to a hamstring injury.
While some have been praising Williams for her longevity, there have also been some who have been calling on the former world No 1 to retire. Pegula doesn’t agree with those claims, saying Williams should “just do whatever she wants.”“I think she should just do whatever she wants.
Clearly, that’s what she’s doing now. She wants to play. I think it’s amazing. It’s incredible that she’s still competing and playing well and winning matches at this age. She’s an icon of our sport. I think for her to still be out there just shows her passion and how much she loves to compete and play.
