Jelena Ostapenko on stunning Latvian government decision: I won’t quit tennis

Jelena Ostapenko has underlined that she will not end her career after a stunning decision made by the Latvian Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Education and Science. A couple of days ago, it was announced that the Latvian Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Education and Science decided to stop funding Latvian athletes who compete in the same tournaments and events as Russian and Belarusian athletes.

Ostapenko, who is regularly competing on the WTA Tour, belongs to that group since Russian and Belarusian athletes have been allowed to continue competing as neutrals. Ostapenko herself cannot influence the participation of Russian and Belarusian players on the WTA Tour.

Because of that, many were absolutely shocked to hear about the position in which Ostapenko found herself.

Ostapenko on the decision made in her country

“Of course they have reached out, but honestly there is really nothing to do because I’m not organizing tournaments.

The WTA is the one who is organizing tournaments and I don’t have any opportunities to play in any other tournaments. It means if I don’t play any other tournaments, I have to quit tennis. But I’m not gonna do that because I’m a tennis player and this is my sport.
