Jelena Ostapenko calls out ‘disrespectful’ Miami crowd, then smiles at them

World No 22 Jelena Ostapenko called the crowd disrespectful and then smiled at them following a Miami Open third-round win over Beatriz Haddad Maia. On Saturday, Ostapenko defeated 14th-ranked Haddad Maia 6-2 4-6 6-3 to progress into the Miami round-of-16.

“Yeah, I am really happy to win today, of course, the crowd was mostly against me, a little bit disrespectful, but thanks guys who were supporting me. I really appreciate it, and yeah, I am just really proud of myself that I was firing.

It felt like a football match today,” Ostapenko said while smiling at the crowd.

How Ostapenko defeated Haddad Maia?

The first break points of the match were seen in the third game, when Ostapenko saved two break points to take a 2-1 lead.

After saving two break points, Ostapenko clinched the first break of the match in the fourth game. In the eighth game – when Haddad Maia was serving to stay in the first set – Ostapenko earned her second break and that’s how the Latvian won the opener.
