After the historic gold medal at the Paris Olympics in the doubles tournament, Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini achieved another prestigious success at the China Open in Beijing, which earned them mathematical qualification for the WTA Finals in Riyadh, ten years after the last time.
For the Italian women’s tennis, this is a return to the top eight couples of the season after a 10-year wait, and it is the second all-Italian couple after the one composed of Errani and Roberta Vinci.
The last tennis player to achieve this was Flavia Pennetta, who participated in the 2015 edition, but in the women’s singles. For Paolini, very close to qualifying in singles too, this is her first participation ever, while for Sara it will be her fourth time, after three consecutive ones between 2012 and 2014, in which she did not go beyond the semifinals.
