We know that we bang on all the time about the importance of wearing the right sports bra for running. And there are a whole host of reasons why. Breast health, chafing, comfort and even stride length are affected. Now, new research has found yet another one. Wearing a sports bra that fits incorrectly can have a serious impact on our breathing as we exercise.
The study appeared in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise this month. It was focused specifically on how the fit of the underband affects breathing while running. They looked at three different underband fits: loose, tight and self-selected by the wearer. The participants ran at different efforts while wearing their bras, while their respiratory function was measured.
The results showed that the runners with tighter sports bra underbands had increased submaximal oxygen uptake and increased work of breathing. Essentially, their breathing was faster and more difficult as they ran, which resulted in reduced running economy. Interestingly, the women who self-selected their underband fit often chose a tighter fit, which again impacted respiratory function.
A quick survey in our office revealed that the WR team also tend to opt for a tighter setting on our sports bras. Why? Well, as we mentioned, we know that our boobs…
