Jasmine Paolini delivered a clinical performance against Emma Navarro to reach her first Wimbledon semifinal and come a win away from making back-to-back Grand Slam finals, while Donna Vekic has been through to her maiden Major semis.
After No. 19 seed Navarro ousted second-seeded Coco Gauff a round earlier, some were giving the 23-year-old American an edge over sixth-seeded Jasmine Paolini simply because grass seemed a better fit for the American’s game. But today, 28-year-old Paolini proved those claims wrong, demolishing Navarro in two sets 6-2 6-1.
Meanwhile, unseeded Vekic ended Lulu Sun’s fairytale Wimbledon run after coming back from a set down to beat the qualifier world No. 123 5-7 6-4 6-1 and set up a semifinal versus Paolini.
Going into the match, Paolini – who recently finished as runner-up at the French Open – owns a 2-1 head-to-head versus Vekic but all of their previous three meetings came on hard courts.
