The best female hockey players in the world will compete in this year’s IIHF Women’s World Championships, which begin Wednesday, April 9.
The tournament will be held in Ceske Budejovice, Czechia, for the first time. In an 11-day stretch, there will be 10 days featuring multiple matches, with action concluding via the championship game on Sunday, April 20.
Canada has won three of the last four world championships, winning the 2024 tournament by virtue of an overtime victory over the U.S. in the championship game. The Americans, who most recently won the tournament in 2023, will aim for redemption at this year’s event.
Might this be the year that a team other than Canada or the U.S. wins it all? Canada (13) and Team USA (10) have combined to win all 23 gold medals in the history of the Women’s World Championships. Finland is the only other nation to ever play in the title game, capturing the silver medal in 2019, when it served as the host country.
Perhaps similar success awaits Czechia, which captured bronze medals in both 2022 and 2023.
