Iga Swiatek has been involved in a doping case in which she was suspended for a month. Wim Fissette, the new coach of the 5-time Slam champion (4-time winner at the French Open) has talked about this period, replying for example to many people – above all Nick Kyrgios, Simona Halep and Yevgeny Kafelnikov – who in recent weeks have strongly attacked the Polish tennis player on one side and Jannik Sinner on the other for the well-known doping issues.
Fissette has told the Polish website przegladsportowy.onet.pl about Swiatek’s hard days.
“Her agent texted me and said, ‘Hey, there’s something we need to talk about.’ So I was lost. Something about my past? I didn’t know what it was. Then Iga explained it to me. And it was special because she trusted me. I mean the way she described everything to me, in great detail. I just have to say, I really respect the way she handled it. From the first moment I was with her,” he explained.
The interviewer asked Fissette why there are people, like Kyrgios now, Kafelnikov or even Halep, who you’ve worked with, who will talk negatively about it and whether that might contribute to Iga having a difficult start in Australia, because she’ll hear these questions over and over again.
