The quarterfinals of the 2023 French Open are underway, and today sees arguably the pick of them.
We have a repeat of the 2022 final as world No. 1 and top seed Iga Swiatek faces American sensation Coco Gauff on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
Swiatek has lost just nine games at Roland-Garros this year and is the overwhelming favourite to win the clay-court grand slam for the third time since 2020. She defeated Gauff 6-1 6-3 in last year’s final.
However, the 19-year-old from Atlanta has looked in strong form. Her straight-sets defeat of Anna Karolina Schmiedlova made her the first teenager in 25 years to reach 15 main-draw victories at Roland-Garros in women’s singles, and she has now reached the quarterfinal stage in Paris three years in a row.
15 – Cori Gauff is the first player to secure 15+ Women’s Singles main draw wins at the Roland Garros as a teenager since Martina Hingis in 1998. Phenomenal.#RolandGarros | @rolandgarros @WTA @WTA_insider pic.twitter.com/LGTXjyVpAz
