Iga Swiatek storms to fourth Roland Garros title

Date:

World No.1 Iga Swiatek raced past first-time Grand Slam finalist Jasmine Paolini 6-2 6-1 to win her 21st consecutive match at Roland Garros and her fifth major title.

World No.15 Paolini, who had never before advanced past the second round of the French Open, was the first to break serve in the final, taking a 2-1 lead in the opening set. However, that was the extent of her challenge to the dominant Roland Garros star. Swiatek then won the next ten games in a row, surging to a 6-2 5-0 lead. Even though Paolini avoided a bagel, Swiatek comfortably served out the victory on her first attempt.

Swiatek’s road to her fourth Roland Garros title was a near-perfect journey, with the exception of an extremely challenging second-round encounter with Naomi Osaka. In that match, the top seed saved a match point and came back from a 5-2 deficit in the third set to win a seemingly lost match. Overcome with emotion, Swiatek cried afterwards, acknowledging the scare in Paris. However, her other matches were all confident straight-set victories against Leolia Jeanjean, Marie Bouzkova, Anastasia Potapova, Marketa Vondrousova, and reigning US Open champion Coco Gauff in the semifinals.
