Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff had a good day at the office on Friday as they have made the French Open round-of-16 and are set to feature in the second week at Roland Garros.
Swiatek, the No. 1 seed and the defending champion, gave no chance to world No. 42 Marie Bouzkova as she dismantled the Czech tennis player 6-4 6-2 in the French Open third round. And in her next match, Swiatek plays against Anastasia Potapova.
Meanwhile, third-seeded Gauff made light work of 2024 Australian Open semifinalist Dayana Yastremska 6-2 6-4 to set up a round-of-16 meeting against Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
How Swiatek overcame Bouzkova?
Swiatek got off to a good start, breaking Bouzkova in the third and seventh games for a routine 5-2 lead. Down by a double break, Bouzkova refused to quit as she managed to get one break in the eighth game and then serve out the next to cut the deficit to 4-5.
However, Swiatek failing to serve out for the opener in her first attempt didn’t impact her much as the Pole routinely closed out the set in the ninth game.
