Iga Swiatek says she still perfectly remembers becoming world No. 1 in “a pretty crazy” way as the Pole is proud of everything she has been able to do since becoming the top-ranked player in the game for the first time.
On Sunday, Swiatek won her Indian Wells title No. 2 after destroying Maria Sakkari 6-4 6-0. Exactly two years ago, Swiatek’s first Indian Wells title came and her final opponent back then was also Sakkari.
Just a day after Swiatek’s first Indian Wells win, Ashleigh Barty – who was the world No. 1 at the time – announced she was retiring from pro tennis at the age of 25. Entering 2022 Miami, Swiatek and Sakkari both had a chance to reach the world No. 1 spot and replace Barty.
After Swiatek won the 2022 Miami title and Sakkari lost, the Pole officially became the world No. 1 for the first time in her career on April 2nd, 2022. Since then, the 22-year-old Pole has spent the majority of the time ranked there as this Monday she entered her 95th week at the top spot.
“Oh, well, I remember everything, honestly. It was pretty crazy,” Swiatek recalled when asked if she remembered how she exactly became the world No. 1 exactly two years ago.
