Iga Swiatek makes bit of history this Monday

Iga Swiatek made a bit of history on Monday as she is the 10th WTA player to hold the world No 1 ranking for 80 weeks. Swiatek, 22, reached the world No 1 ranking for the first time on April 4th, 2022. In her stint as the world No 1, Swiatek spent 75 consecutive weeks at the top spot.

After this year’s US Open, Swiatek was replaced by Aryna Sabalenka at the world No 1 spot. Following her WTA Finals win in early November, Swiatek regained the world No 1 spot. This Monday, Swiatek officially entered her 80th week at the world No 1 spot.

Previously, when Swiatek entered her 72nd week at the world No 1 spot, she surpassed Caroline Wozniacki at the 10th spot for the most weeks spent at the top spot.

Swiatek impressively regained the world No 1 spot from Sabalenka

When Swiatek arrived in Cancun, she had a shot at returning to the world No 1 spot but those chances weren’t really the highest since Sabalenka had everything in her hands.

But Swiatek went 5-0 in Cancun and she also defeated Sabalenka in the semifinal. By going a perfect 5-0 and stopping Sabalenka in the semifinal, Swiatek returned to the world No 1 spot and ensured she would start as the No 1 in back-to-back seasons.
