After enduring a challenging first half of the opening set, defending champion Iga Swiatek absolutely dominated the remainder of the match against Spain’s Cristina Bucsa and cruised into the second round of Roland Garros 6-4 6-0.
In the first set, Swiatek twice battled from a break down against the world No.70 Bucsa, but each time she did it right away. After leveling the score at 4-4, the top seed showcased her dominance by winning an impressive eight consecutive games, ultimately securing the victory in just one hour and 15 minutes.
Swiatek has held the No.1 ranking since April 4, 2022, and is spending her 61st and 62nd consecutive weeks atop the WTA rankings during Roland Garros. The Pole will need to reach the quarterfinals to have any chance of extending stay at No.1.
Tomorrow, May 31, Swiatek will celebrate her 22nd birthday. The three-time Grand Slam champion will have a day off before her second-round match, so she will have a little bit more time to make the most of her special day.
