Iga Swiatek needed three sets and an hour and 52 minutes to get past Tatjana Maria in the first round of the Bad Homburg Open on Tuesday. Swiatek fought from down a set to claim a 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 victory. Early on in the match, Swiatek built a lead over the German but the latter turned the set around, and even secured a second break against the Pole to clinch the set.
The second and third sets were a lesson in dominance by Swiatek. She faced just two break points in the match and both of those were the ones she failed to save in the opener. Maria couldn’t come near her serve in the latter two sets.
Swiatek finished the match by converting six of 10 break points that came her way on the 35-year-old’s serve. After her win, Swiatek credited her opponent for her strong showing. She said, “She has a different game style and at the beginning it was tricky.
But I’m pretty glad that I figured it out because I guess problem-solving on grass is the most important thing. So, I really just wanted to look forward and thank what I could change. I know I have the game for that. I just had to find it a little bit”.
In the round-of-16, Swiatek’s opponent will be Jil…
