Iga Swiatek has dropped another major statement on the WTA Tour calendar, saying the demands of it are “making it less fun for us players” and also warns that it is “not going to end well” if some things don’t change.
Swiatek, a five-time Grand Slam champion and the best player in the game for over the past two years, has been a vocal critic of the schedule for quite some time. But at this week’s WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati, the 23-year-old Pole went a step further with her criticism.
First, Swiatek described the tennis calendar as “the toughest in all sports” and added that it was only “getting crazier” instead of better. And while that claim made the headlines, the current world No. 1 had more to say on the same matter after edging out Mirra Andreeva 4-6 6-3 7-5 in the Cincinnati quarterfinal.
“So what can I say I’ve been kind of an advocate, saying that well, we shouldn’t be pushing and pushing for us to play more. Obviously, it’s not our decision, but for sure, I think we have too many tournaments in the season. It’s not gonna end well as it’s just it makes tennis less fun for us. Let’s just say, I mean, obviously, I love playing all these places but it’s pretty exhausting,” Swiatek told Sky Sports.
