Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina & Barbora Krejcikova out of Toronto; here are reasons

Date:

The National Bank Open in Toronto has been hit with some tough news as Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina and Barbora Krejcikova won’t be competing at this year’s tournament.

Swiatek, ranked at No. 1 in the world, concluded her Paris Olympics run on Friday after destroying Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-2 6-1 in the bronze medal match.

But shortly after landing her maiden Olympic medal, the 23-year-old Pole decided to withdraw from a WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto – which starts on Wednesday – due to fatigue.

“I’m sorry to announce that due to overall fatigue caused by the last couple of weeks on the court, I need to withdraw from the tournament in Toronto. Due to an intense tennis schedule with the Olympics taking place this year and changing surfaces, I need more time to rest and recover in order to be ready to play the US swing in good health and at my best possible level. Looking forward to playing in Toronto next time!” Swiatek said in a statement.

In the past, Swiatek made three appearances at the National Bank Open – twice in Toronto and once in Montreal. In Toronto, Swiatek didn’t enjoy much success since she picked up round-of-16 exits in 2019 and 2022 but she was a semifinalist when the tournament was held in Montreal last year.
