Iga Swiatek dominates Jessica Pegula in Cancun final, returns to No.1

Iga Swiatek blitzed past Jessica Pegula 6-1 6-0 in the final of the season-ending championships in Cancun and ensured a comeback to the No.1 ranking. The 22-year-old won her 17th career title and first at the WTA Finals.

Due to rainy and windy weather, the final was postponed by a day and ultimately took place on a sunny Monday at the venue in Mexico. In the title match which both players reached without dropping a set, Swiatek was in a clinical mood as Pegula struggled to find her rhythm. Notably, Pegula was the first player to face the world No.1, No.2, No.3 and No.4 in a single event since the WTA rankings were published in 1975.

The fewest games dropped en route to the WTA Finals title had been 34 (Justine Henin, 2007), but Swiatek now dramatically improved that record, having lost just 20 games in Cancun. With the win in the championship match, the Pole dethroned Aryna Sabalenka from the top spot and secured the year-end No.1 ranking for the second time in her career.
