Iga Swiatek ensured stay at the world No 1 spot for at least another week by beating Karolina Muchova in the Montreal round-of-16. On Thursday – in a rematch of this year’s French Open final – Swiatek beat Muchova 6-1 4-6 6-4.
By securing a Montreal quarterfinal spot, Swiatek ensured to stay at the world No 1 spot beyond Montreal. The following day, Sabalenka suffered a Montreal round-of-16 loss to Liudmila Samsonova. But even if Sabalenka won Montreal after Swiatek’s win over Muchova, it wouldn’t have made any difference since the Pole would have still kept her top spot.
Swiatek, who became No 1 on April 4th, 2022, is now set to enter her 72nd consecutive week at the top spot.
Swiatek beat Muchova, guaranteed to stay at No 1
After beating Muchova, Swiatek admitted it was “a pretty extraordinary day.” The match was twice suspended due to rain and the match finished nine hours after it started.
