The first day of the year 2023 was marked Bianca Andreescu’s spectacular comeback win over Garbine Muguruza in the first round of the Adelaide International 1, 0-6 7-6(3) 6-1.
In a clash of Grand Slam champions, Andreescu recovered from 6-0 5-2 down to knock out Muguruza in two hours and 12 minutes and improved her head-to-head record against the former world No.1 to 3-0.
The 2019 US Open titlist Andreescu said after her win at the WTA 500 tournament in Australia:
In the second set I really had to change my gameplan. I told myself to go for it, whatever happens happens. I put more returns in the court, more serves in the court. I’m so glad I pulled that out, I have no idea how.
Serving for the match at 5-3 in the second set, Muguruza was unable to close out the victory. Andreescu got the set back on serve and took a crucial 4-2 lead in the tiebreak by slamming a backhand winner down the line. After sealing the second set with an ace, Andreescu established a 3-1 lead in the decider and eased from there.
Andreescu’s opponent in the second round of the Adelaide International will be either fourth seed Veronika Kudermetova or Amanda Anisimova.
