Last week, Sophie Power broke the Guinness World Record for running the length of Ireland in an astonishing time of 3 days and 12 hours.
Sophie is no stranger to challenging her body. Just six years ago, she made global headlines when she was snapped breastfeeding her baby during the 105-mile UTMB. In more recent times, she’s been pushing limits as a GB ultrarunner, and while she’s not doing that, she’s also the founder of SheRACES, an organisation dedicated to equalising race start lines and experiences for women.
But taking on a record set by the great Mimi Anderson back in 2012 was a brand new adventure for the legendary runner. I spoke to her a few days after her epic run when, she assured me, she was conducting the interview with her legs propped up a wall.
First of all, congratulations! How are you feeling?
Chronically exhausted! The first night after the run I woke up every 30 minutes thinking I had to run. My adrenalin was so high! The second night, I was being kept awake by the pain – particularly my feet and my undercarriage! My bum was in so much pain. The third night I was kept awake by night sweats.
That sounds awful, when you just need rest…
After the event, no one talks about this – I lost 5lb on that third day, and another 2.5lb the day after…
