‘I don’t know what that means’

Danielle Collins didn’t like one Rome question very much as the American tennis star wasn’t happy to hear an interview insinuating that her good form was caused in some ways by her upcoming retirement.

Collins, who turned 30 in December, announced during this year’s Australian Open that she was playing her last season on the Tour. Since revealing her plans, Collins has played some of the best tennis of her career.

After winning her first WTA 1000 title in Miami, Collins also won a WTA 500 tournament in Charleston and returned to the top-20 in the world. Following back-to-back titles, world No. 15 Collins also made the Madrid Open round-of-16 before reaching the semifinal at the ongoing Rome Open.

On Wednesday, Collins clinched another very impressive wins in recent weeks as she ousted two-time Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka 6-4 6-3. Following her win, Collins was asked if she was playing with more freedom lately since in her mind she knows she is soon retiring.

“I don’t really know what that means, to play freely. I’ve put so much work into this over the years. My success is a product of that and I hope people can respect that,” Collins said.
