Hubert Hurkacz has just confirmed what many feared would happen as he is out of the Paris Olympics and that means Poland won’t have a superstar mixed doubles duo consisting of Hurkacz and Iga Swiatek.
18 days ago, world No. 7 Hurkacz suffered a brutal ending to his Wimbledon run in a scene that left the crowd stunned and in disbelief. Down two sets to one to Arthur Fils in their Wimbledon second-round match and with the score tied to seven points apiece in the fourth-set tie-break, Hurkacz injured his right knee after attempting a dive at the net.
While Hurkacz won that point to go 8-7 up, he had to be helped by Fils to get back to his feet and a trainer was instantly called to the court. But the trainer couldn’t do much as Hurkacz was evidently in major pain and discomfort – and after Fils won the next two points to open a 9-8 lead – the Pole retired while a match point down.
