Perfect through the first six games of the season, the fifth-ranked UNC women’s soccer team travels a few miles down the road to face rival Duke early Thursday in an in-conference matchup.
North Carolina is looking to navigate its first season without legendary head coach Anson Dorrance, who retired abruptly just a week before the start of the campaign. Dorrance, who led the Tar Heels for an astonishing 44 years, was replaced by assistant Damon Nahas on an interim basis.
The shakeup has done nothing to derail the start of their season. The first three victories came via one-goal margins, including a win over 16th-ranked Georgia. The most recent three victories were more dominant, beating Arizona, North Dakota, and Seton Hall by a combined 7-0.
Duke, unranked in the latest poll, has played just three games thus far, starting the season with a 1-0 loss at Ohio State before bouncing back to beat Nebraska and UNC Wilmington. The Blue Devils’ most recent fixture against Tennessee last weekend was cancelled after inclement weather rolled in just three minutes into the match.
