The women’s college basketball non-conference schedule this fall is one worth remembering, and it hasn’t even finished yet. Two of the Big Ten’s newest West Coast members take on top 10 opponents this week, with the Bruins and Gamecocks rounding out the weekend slate Sunday.
No. 5 UCLA and No. 1 South Carolina will face off in Westwood, with both teams yet to take on their first loss. Dawn Staley’s squad has won five straight, including statement wins over Michigan, No. 9 NC State and most recently, in-state rival Clemson, while the Bruins beat No. 17 Louisville in their season opener 66-59 and mauled Arkansas 101-52 last time out.
Though it’s not a conference matchup, high-stakes games like this could play a role in seeding for the NCAA tournament. It may not matter right now, but as the season goes on, a win for either team Sunday night could be the difference between a top seed and the middle of the pack.
