It’s officially time for college hoops, and No. 1 South Carolina hopes to continue its stretch of dominance when the Gamecocks travel to Las Vegas to take on Michigan in the season opener.
The Gamecocks are fresh off a historic 2023-24 campaign in which they earned the SEC regular season title, SEC tournament title and the title of national champions. South Carolina looks to maintain its spot at the top of the mountain and Dawn Staley has the roster to do so. Ten of the 11 scholarship players who were on South Carolina’s championship roster are back with the Gamecocks for another season. Among those names is MiLaysia Fulwiley, last season’s SEC Tournament MVP.
Michigan will open its season against the No. 1 team in the country for just the second time in program history, the first and only time coming in 1988. The Wolverines finished the 2023-24 season with a 20-14 overall record that included wins over then-No. 17 Ohio State and then-No. 12 Indiana in the Big Ten Tournament. Michigan has four returners on its roster, highlighted by Jordan Hobbs (9.8 ppg, 4.2 rpg last season), and welcomes a five-star recruit in freshman Syla Swords, who played for Canada in the 2024 Olympics.
