After a thrilling 2023 season in which the NWSL grew significantly in popularity and visibility, top young players are set to join the league’s journey for the coming 2024 campaign.
Two expansion sides will join the league for the upcoming year, as Bay FC brings the top U.S. women’s league to San Jose, California and a familiar name returns in the Utah Royals.
Needing to build an entire roster from scratch, those two clubs have the top two picks in the draft, which leaves 2023 basement dweller Chicago Red Stars to pick third. Some teams, like OL Reign and NC Courage, saw multiple players picked in December’s expansion draft, leading to holes in the roster for the coming year.
NJ/NY Gotham FC won the 2023 title and therefore will slot in at the bottom of the 2024 draft order. The club has targeted free agents since lifting the trophy, looking to build on their championship run by signing USWNT stars Rose Lavelle and Emily Sonnett in the offseason.
