How much are Women’s Super League teams worth?

The Athletic reported last week that investors are interested in purchasing a minority stake in Chelsea Women and the club’s co-owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital are prepared to consider proposals.

Chelsea value their seven-time Women’s Super League champions, who added a seventh WSL title under departing manager Emma Hayes on Saturday, on equal footing with Angel City.

This year, the National Women’s Super League (NWSL) franchise based in Los Angeles was valued at $180million (£143m) by sports business website Sportico. It has been interpreted that Chelsea could target an investment that would value their women’s side at $200m.

But is that an accurate valuation? And how much would clubs such as Arsenal, Liverpool or Manchester United be worth in comparison?


“In terms of any potential Chelsea sale, that asking price does appear high,” says football finance expert Kieran Maguire.

“All the clubs in WSL are losing money so, under normal circumstances, you don’t tend to be looking at a wide suite of investors or necessarily high prices.”
