How Kim Mulkey plans to take the next step in Year 2 with LSU after defying expectations

BATON ROUGE, La. — Kim Mulkey leans back in her chair, sighs and says, “Oh Lord, I’m much too young to feel this old.” She’s coming off a weekend with a 7 a.m. Saturday practice before a full day of recruiting and an 11 a.m. LSU football game. “I’m still recouping on Monday,” she jokes.

But you don’t really believe her. Not as you talk to her in her brand-new LSU office with cheetah print chairs in the brand-new women’s basketball facilities she helped build. Not as she talks of her wild trip to the Angola Prison Rodeo the week before or her exciting new roster. And definitely not 30 minutes later as she talks about Type A personality coaches and getting what you want. About staying hungry and demanding ways to always get more.

“You never stop,” she says, “and I’m never gonna stop.”

No, Mulkey, 60, is just in the beginning of building whatever will become of this new era in LSU women’s basketball. If last year’s 26-win campaign was a shocking first-year performance with a roster that most expected to finish toward the bottom of the SEC, this season is beginning to look more like Mulkey’s program.
