GREENVILLE, S.C. — With two seconds left on the clock, Diamond Miller started doing The Griddy. The final buzzer then rang, signaling the end of No. 2 seed Maryland’s dominant 76-59 win against third-seeded Notre Dame, and Miller ran out to midcourt, her arms outstretched.
She skipped toward her teammates. She danced in front of Maryland’s pep band. This had to have been what the senior All-American guard had in mind.
“We’re making history right now,” Miller said. “It’s amazing, and we’re not done yet.”
Maryland is headed to the Elite Eight for the 15th time in school history, but the first time since 2015 following an offseason that raised no shortage of question marks for coach Brenda Frese and her Terrapins. Leading scorers Angel Reese (LSU) and Ashley Owusu (Virginia Tech) both hit the transfer portal. The only two players to average more than 30 minutes per game, Chloe Bibby and Katie Benzan — who broke Maryland’s career 3-point percentage record — each ran out of eligibility.
Five players transferred out. Five more transferred in, as Maryland added nine new players in total.
