KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Once the X-ray scan revealed no broken bones in his right ankle, quarterback Patrick Mahomes knew exactly how his workday Sunday would end. It was longer than usual, too, even though the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Cleveland Browns before dinner time.
While the Chiefs traveled home to Kansas City on their charter flight, Mahomes began his six-day rehab plan to help his high ankle sprain recover faster than the average NFL player.
“I wasn’t doing high knees or anything like that,” Mahomes said smiling, a joke referencing quarterback Russell Wilson’s time with the Denver Broncos. “We did some movement stuff, some icing and some stem (cell therapy). We kept it moving. We didn’t want it to sit there and get too stiff.”
After the flight, Mahomes headed to the Chiefs’ training facility instead of his home so that he could receive even more treatment and do an initial assessment of the flexibility he had in his right ankle.
Much of the same happened Monday.
“I was just here pretty much all day,” Mahomes said before Tuesday’s practice. “When you want to get out there and play and give yourself the best chance, you’ve got to spend the time here. Luckily, I have a great wife (Brittany) who will take care of the kids while I’m in the building…
