Greg Rusedski says women’s tennis needs a couple of really strong rivalries and applauded Coco Gauff for “bringing another audience to the sport who aren’t tennis fans.” When Ashleigh Barty shockingly retired in 2022 March, women’s tennis was left without its biggest star and the player who was ranked at No 1 in the world at the time.
Last year, Swiatek absolutely dominated after Barty’s retirement, while Elena Rybakina also managed to become a Grand Slam champion at 2022 Wimbledon. This year, Swiatek got some competition as Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka also joined the Grand Slam champions club.
Women’s tennis isn’t lacking talent and there are several matchups that have a real chance of becoming major tennis rivalries.

Because in the men’s game, you’ve got Carlos, the young buck, versus Novak Djokovic, the legend of our sport. You know, you need a Coco-Swiatek, you need a Coco-Sabalenka. You need a group that’s playing in Majors finals or semis week in and week out.
