HARRISON, NJ — Expectations loom large for the defending National Women’s Soccer League Champions, but NJ/NY Gotham FC has gotten off to a slow start.

The worst-to-first winners of 2023 spent the offseason assembling what could only be described as a super team, adding four U.S. women’s national team players to an already stacked roster. With only one win in five games, the NJ/NY side has not started off the year with the bang that many had anticipated.

“We want to be getting more points out of games and it’s not the most ideal start, but it’s obviously early on in the season — you don’t want to be peaking now, you want to be peaking at the right time,” said midfielder Rose Lavelle after the game on Sunday. “There’s a huge opportunity for growth. Going down today 1-0, our response immediately after was great. Those are opportunities where you get to grow, learn, and be better.”
