Golden start for Titmus in China – More Sport – The Women’s Game

Date:

The 18-year-old claimed gold and a new Australian and Oceania record in the women’s 200m freestyle with a time of 1:51.38.

Titmus swam alongside Carla Buchanan in the 200m freestyle heat, with Buchanan coming in seventh in a time of 1:55.64.

“I have been working on my speed, so I am glad it paid off. I knew the back end was my strength, so I just tried to play to that and it worked,” Titmus said.

“It is my first individual world title, so it is a good stepping stone to next year with World Championships and then Olympics after that”.

The gold is the newest addition to her medal haul in 2018, having picked up a gold and two silvers at the Pan Pacs and three golds and a silver at the Commonwealth Games.

Emily Seebohm and Jess Hansen both qualified for the semi-finals in 50m breaststroke but finished 14th (30.45) and eighth (29.96) respectively.

Hansen had to swim-off for the spot against Miho Teramura from Japan to qualify for the final.

In the 100m backstroke, Seebohm and Minna Atherton came home second and third in their semi-final to qualify fifth and sixth for the final.
