Gio Reyna included in USMNT squad following Gregg Berhalter investigation

U.S. winger Gio Reyna will return to the U.S. team for the first time since November’s World Cup — and just a week after U.S. Soccer released an independent investigation that heavily involved his family.

The U.S. will face Grenada on March 24 and El Salvador on March 27 in the CONCACAF Nations League.

U.S. Soccer on Monday released the results of an independent investigation that was focused on former coach Gregg Berhalter and an instance of physical abuse 31 years ago against his then-girlfriend, now-wife Rosalind Berhalter. Reyna’s parents — former U.S. players Claudio and Danielle Reyna — brought the incident to the attention of then-sporting director Earnie Stewart in mid-December after news of Gio Reyna’s lack of effort at the World Cup was reported.

The investigation also included details of Claudio Reyna’s “pattern of periodic outreach” to officials at U.S. Soccer about his son, including refereeing during his youth games, travel to youth national team tournaments and playing time and role on U.S. youth and senior national teams, including the World Cup.
