UConn women’s basketball faces its biggest game of the season at noon ET Sunday, a battle with No. 1 South Carolina. But according to coach Geno Auriemma, they may not be ready.
“We’re tired and we’re hurt, and we’re not in a great place right now,” he told reporters Wednesday after a win over Providence. “These games are starting to take their toll on us.”
UConn has more than managed to stay afloat despite injuries depleting its roster. The Huskies are 21-2 and hold the No. 5 spot in the AP Top 25, but their limited resources have presented challenges.
A January game against DePaul had to be postponed when the Huskies didn’t have enough players, and on several occasions Auriemma has been forced to rely on a seven or six-player rotation.
In a win over No. 19 Villanova on Jan. 29, the Huskies played just six players, with Aaliyah Edwards, Dorka Juhász and Nika Muhl on the court for all 40 minutes of action.
The Huskies await the returns of Caroline Ducahrme and Azzi Fudd, both of whom are expected to play again this season.
