Geno Auriemma absent from UConn while recovering from illness

UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma missed his second straight game Wednesday as he recovers from illness.

The legendary coach began to experience flu-like symptoms ahead of Sunday’s game against Florida State. He will remain away from the team through the weekend as he recuperates, the team announced Tuesday.

So when the Huskies (9-2) hosted Seton Hall at the XL Center on Wednesday afternoon, they did so without Auriemma’s guidance. Still, they seemed ready for the challenge, as they won 98-73, paced by 23 points from Aaliyah Edwards.

In its first game in the coach’s absence, UConn claimed an 85-77 victory against Florida State. Edwards led the team with a career-high 26 points, and Lou Lopez Sénéchal matched her season high with 23 points.

Associate head coach Chris Dailey has been leading the team in Auriemma’s stead.

“There’s been a lot going on in the last couple weeks, and I think it caught up to my physically,” Auriemma said in a statement. “I’ve been feeling under the weather for about 10 days now, and my doctor recommended I take a few days off to fully recover.
