Gael Monfils says his wife Elina Svitolina’s Wimbledon run left him feeling “proud” and “inspired.” Svitolina, who gave birth to daughter Skai in October, was out for 13 months before returning to tennis in April. In her first two Grand Slam tournaments back, Svitolina heavily impressed as she made the French Open quarterfinal before reaching the semifinal at Wimbledon.
Svitolina’s Wimbledon run was particularly impressive as the Ukrainian defeated world No 1 Iga Swiatek en route to reaching her second semifinal at The Championships. While Svitolina was competing at Wimbledon, Monfils stayed home to take care of his wrist injury and daughter Skai.

“Just proud of my wife, to be honest. How much work she has put in to be at that level. How much discipline she had. I was amazed by her strength, mentally, in some matches, to turn them around and then come back for her next match – I was proud and inspired.
