Coco Gauff’s hopes of winning her second Grand Slam title at this year’s Wimbledon have come to an end after she suffered a surprise loss to fellow American Emma Navarro.
Navarro, seeded at No. 19, delivered a huge performance on Sunday event to oust second-seeded Gauff 6-4 6-3 and progress into her first-ever Grand Slam quarterfinal at Wimbledon.
Even though 2023 US Open champion Gauff entered the match as the favorite, it was Navarro who was basically dictating and controlling everything for the majority of the match. Throughout their meeting, Navarro was able to execute her game plan – which included targeting Gauff’s forehand – and she never panicked and ended up getting the job done in two sets.
When Gauff fell down by a set and a break, she started showing nerves and tension as at one point she turned to her team and desperately asked for some advice and tips. But whatever the top-ranked American female tennis player heard didn’t work and she ended up concluding her run in the round-of-16.
For a place in the Wimbledon semifinal, Navarro will play against recent French Open runner-up Jasmine Paolini.
